The time you have in jelly beans is depressing
This video was and still is a huge hit on youtube. After watching it, I decided to write this - here’s what I’ve found.Below this video, there is a comment that says:”This was oddly depressing.” I think she is right, but not in the sense of: “This video tells how it is” – no, but in the sense of: “This is not the whole story.” I’ve stumbled upon this on one of my recent crusades through the google+ jungle.
In the beginning, I thought this was great; however, less than half way through the video, I understood that the author had destroyed his own message by missing the whole point of it.
With all respect to the author, Ze Frank – I hope he won’t take it personally – but throughout the video, he tells us about all the things we do in our daily lives: sleeping, eating, traveling, household activities, caring for the needs of our family, community activities, and so on.
Towards the end, he concludes with the question: what are you gonna do with this time (that is left after doing all of this) for yourself?
A DNA check on the time you have in jelly beans
It sounded as if he had really hit the point. But there is something that came to mind: it is not really important how much time is left of your life, and it isn’t really important what you do after you have fulfilled all of your other obligations to your family and this society – important is, what you are doing with your time in general.Do you go to family meetings because you have to? Do you do a job you like doing? Are you pleasing everyone around you, because you feel you are having the obligation to do so? Are you watching TV everyday, perhaps even for several hours? Are you stuffing yourself with unhealthy food to combat your depression?
Do you still get drunk sometimes to relax, since – after all – you deserve it after working all week long? Is it fun to take care of all the things you are taking care of?
Forget about jelly beans
I think the video should go the other way around. If you can answer all these questions to your satisfaction, then you don’t have to mind those little jelly beans that are left over – go and take a nap or meet some inspiring friends and have good laugh about some completely irrelevant things. You should do what you love to do – don’t save up some beans for a time that will never come. You do it now or never.I know many have seen this video - look at it now again from this perspective.
